There are plenty of ways to spend your free time, so what makes sailing so special? The answer lies in the enjoyment & fun it offers says young Ayesha Lobo who has been successfully sailing for the past 12 years. Ayesha’s journey started as a 10 year old, when her dad’s friend took her out sailing. She liked the whole atmosphere of ‘wind in your face’, water splashing and the freedom on the water. She joined a sailing school and two years hence participated in a sailing championship. When asked about her experience as a woman sailor she says, “Initially it was difficult as I was part of the first women sailors team but the navy supported us tremendously as they wanted to develop women in the sport”. Ayesha’s ambition is to represent India in a sailing category at the 2012 Olympic Games to be held in London.

She happens to be one of the most promising young women sailors in the world and has her own women’s sailing team. Ayesha has sailed 8 International events and 23 national events. When asked about her first championship she remarks, “It was when I was 15 years old. I won the junior class where there were a hundred boats and I finished eighth. It was called the Optimist Passion and I won the girls trophy, that was the first championship I won ever.” In one of the international events she was placed in the top five.

“Sailing in India is slowly picking up. Most of the times people think that it is a very expensive sport, and only those in the league of Vijay Mallya can afford it ” says Ayesha. There evidently lies a misconception in the current scenario for sailing. It is a sport accessible to one and all. As a woman sailor she is of the opinion that the conditions and the situations for women in sailing hasn’t changed much. She says, “Whenever we go for a championship we don’t say that we are competing for a women’s trophy, we say that we are competing against men.” In India there is no particular section for women’s events whereas one may find it abroad.

The determination towards sailing makes her what she is today. She loves sailing and has a great passion for it which keeps her going. Ayesha is pursuing her studies right now and is in the third and final year of her graduation. As a sailor she already trains people and introduces them to the sport. Ayesha is in two minds about turning her favourite sport into a career, “I also dive and do other things so I have a lot of options open,” says the 20 year old Ayesha.

Pacific north-west yacht charters offer beautiful scenery and mostly protected waters. The best time of year for yacht charter in the Pacific north-west is from May to August. The most popular chartering area in North America is this cross-border region featuring the state of Washington and the province of British Columbia. Winds are rarely strong in the summer, although tidal currents can be, so it’s an ideal area for yacht charters. Often flanked by mountain peaks to the east and west, yacht charterers can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the San Juan Islands, the waterfronts of Victoria and Sidney on Vancouver Island, and the mountainous splendors to the north. The rugged coastline of 290-mile-long Vancouver Island could keep a cruiser occupied for an entire summer season.

The weather of Sitka, Alaska is extremely unpredictable and so it is best to visit these places May-June-July because the temperature here is higher at this time as compared to the rest of the year. It’s best to layer clothing with a short sleeve shirt, a sweater and a light waterproof jacket. You can easily add or peel layers depending on weather changes or your activity. Comfortable, weather resistant walking shoes are a must year-round.

The geography of the Alaskan Inside passage, stretches 1,000 miles from Puget Sound, Washington, to Skagway, Alaska. From there, thousands of glaciers line the next 500 miles around the Gulf of Alaska. In Alaska, you will be exploring on a yacht, glaciers in the background, whales breaking the surface nearby. You have to relax and enjoy the numerous islands and inlets. The tourist feels peace and serenity while his eyes feast on the unspoiled and untouched beauty.

The Inside Passage is the most popular cruising destination in Alaska from Vancouver up to the Glacier Bay national park. The tourist will witness historic and romantic scenery and the majestic wildlife: whales, eagles and bears. Wildlife abounds, Orca, Minke, or Humpback whales, black and grizzly bears on the beaches with eagles soaring overhead make everyday a new adventure. The more adventurous should head out into the North Pacific to visit Icy Bay before moving up to Prince William Sound and witnessing the huge ice face of the Columbia glacier calving enormous bergs of ice into the water. Alaska consists of LeConte Glacier which is the southernmost glacier in North America, the Tongass National Forest, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park which is a World Heritage Site given by UNESCO and Admiralty islands, that are famous for having the maximum number of Brown bears in the world. Also World class fishing, notably for salmon and halibut is found in Alaska.

Explore scenic Ogden Passage by sea kayak and shore boat, stopping for a relaxing soak at White Sulfur Hot Springs. Kayak among great rafts of sea otters making their home on this hidden secret of Southeast Alaska. Visit Gustavus for a walk on the fine sandy beaches left by the retreating glaciers following the fresh tracks of moose that abound in the area. Salmon, halibut and Dungeness crab are abundant for the angler and an optional sightseeing trip with a local bush pilot over the spectacular Glacier Bay Park is available.

Traveling here is easy; by Alaska Airlines which has daily flights to Sitka. Best buys and lookouts for the tourists here would majorly include traditional Tlingit designs in silver work, totem poles, carvings, masks and woven baskets; Russian lacquer boxes, nesting dolls, icons, and paintings; contemporary Alaskan artwork, sculpture, and wearable art; and gold nugget jewelry can be found in stores throughout the community. Visit Elfin Cove and explore the boardwalk village of artists and fisherman, bartering for fresh oysters and the catch of the day. Foodies will be thrilled to find Alaskan delicacies such as canned or smoked salmon and wild berry products. The quality and variety of items found in Sitka will keep you awestruck!

Sailing was introduced to the Olympics at the 1900 Games in Paris. With the exception of 1904, the sport has appeared at every Olympic Games since then. The United States has won the most sailing medals (57) in the Olympics and Great Britain has won the most gold medals (20).

The structure of the sport has changed over the years. Most of the Olympic sailing competitions were done in what is called a fleet race format. At some Olympics, however, was also the match-race format, or a mixed fleet/match race format. Co-ed events were held from 1900 to 1988. After that, both gender-specific and co-ed events have been held. In the early Olympic Games sailing was dominated by bigger boats, sometimes with as many as 10-12 sailors, and time handicaps were used to adjudicate the races but nowadays smaller In the last 20 years, equipment trials have resulted in several new boats reflecting the latest developments in the sport. During the 2004 Athens Games, only one event had a three-person crew (Yngling), with five events contested by lone sailors. Currently the line-up of boats is a mixture between classes with a long and distinguished history, like the Star and the Finn, and those reflecting the design and technology advances in the sport, such as the 49er.

Women have always been allowed to compete in Olympic sailing with men, but in 1988, separate sailing events were introduced exclusively for women. The Olympic sailing programme in 2004 consisted of men’s, women’s and open events.

In effect, sailing made its Olympic debut in Sydney, as it became the first Olympic sport to make a name change. The sport had always been called yachting in the past, it was at the Sydney that the name was changed to Sailing.
Indian sailors have participated in the sailing event at Olympicsand India has been participating since 1972. In Athens in 2004, a wildcard entry got Sumeet Patel and Malav Shroff the chance to test themselves against the world’s accomplished yachtsmen in the 49er class. After their first appearance at the 1972 Munich Games, Indian yachtsmen failed to qualify for Montreal (1976), Moscow (1980), Atlanta (1996) and Sydney (2000).

N S Johal

In the recent Olympics held at Beijing (2008) N S Johal who was the lone Indian, competing in the Finn category (heavyweight dingy) finished 23rd in a field of 26 boats, a remarkable performance by India. The sport is so competitive at the Olympic level that qualifying itself is a hurdle for Indians. Johal is the highest ranked Asian.

The 2012 olympic game is going to be held in London. The waters of Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour will host the 10 great sailing events during the London 2012 Olympic Games. Ten gold medals will be awarded and 380 athletes are expected to take part. The sailing classes have two changes from the Beijing 2008 sailing events. The women’s Match Race competition replaces the Yngling competition and the Tornado Class Catamaran competition has been dropped. 14 days of competition that should offer plenty of excitement and drama in the beautiful but testing waters of Weymouth Bay, on the south coast of England. London 2012 is considering making Sailing a ticketed event.

The Mumbai International Boat Show (MIBS) ended on a high note this year. MIBS offers a unique opportunity to participate in a well-established and trusted platform and caters to arguably the last large untapped leisure boating market in the world! This year; MIBS was a well-attended yachting event with a rise in both exhibitors and visitors from all parts of the globe when it was held between 23rd to 26th February. MIBS, now in its sixth edition; reinforced its top position in India’s Boating Industry as India’s largest boat show with an increase in the number of old companies coming back to participate in the show.

90 + Brands (view exhibitor list)

25% increase on last year’s exhibitors

10,000 sq. m of land exhibition area (air-conditioned) (view images)

Over 5000 visitors

Exhibitors give positive feedback, report strong leads from serious buyers

What is truly unique about this event is that MIBS has become more than a boat show. With its association with the CII (Confederation of Indian Industry), the MIBS works towards bringing an effective change to the many discrepancies in the boating industry in India. The CII Boating Conference alongside MIBS is a much anticipated event and attracts a sizeable audience. The one-day conference attended by over 200 delegates with key speakers from India and abroad; has become an excellent platform to voice concerns and arrive at solutions.

The opening day of the show witnessed an exciting fashion show hosted by leading luxury brand, Gitanjali Lifestyle. Club Torque, displayed Audi and Ferrari super-cars; leading real estate firm, Ahuja Construction hosted the VIP Preview evening, Mantri Builders, Bangalore hosted the Networking Dinner organized to bring together exhibitors and the lucky draw to win free yacht charters was sponsored by Blue Bay Marine. These surrounding events made MIBS a spectacular luxury and lifestyles how that promoted the boating culture in India.

Analysing the Market and Demand:

The boat show now attracts an experienced audience. Almost 30% of the visitors had visited other boat shows around the world and India. Guests at the show were more interested in sailboats, sailing programs and club memberships as compared to buying and chartering motor yachts. There has been a healthy demand for pre-owned boats and second-hand water sports equipment as small time businesses are beginning to crop up at holiday destinations along the coast. This season overall has been slack in terms of inquiries and the boat show succeeded in turning the situation around. The feedback from the exhibitors was positive and they look forward to sales resulting from the show. They were happy with the quality of visitors and inquiries and managed to bag many potential leads.

Apart from the annual boat show, dealers and manufacturers are looking outside of the city for potential sales leads. The fast paced city of Mumbai is home to many high net worth individuals who have the power to purchase but do not find the time to enjoy their purchase. Mumbai may well remain the heart of boating but the limbs are extending towards other cities in India. Pune in Maharashtra for example, just a few hours away from Mumbai, is home to many retired CEOs and has the largest student community. Gujarat is developing in a big way and its State tourism board has taken a keen interest in promoting marine tourism. Gujarat is also home to the country’s first Special Investment Region (SIR). An SIR is different from an SEZ (Special Economic Zone) —it is bigger and is not merely export-oriented; instead offers a residential city that grows vertically based on digital planning coexists with industrial estates, a hub of financial and banking services and educational institutions. Other cities like Goa, Kochi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Calcutta, Delhi and Chandigarh are key targets for potential sales leads. Majority of the demand stems from the government and is yet to gain consistency with individual potential buyers all over India.

Concluding Remarks:

With the continued efforts of MIBS and CII, boating in India is sure to grow. Those who have sincerely appreciated the boating conference want it to become a multi-city affair, for they believe it is sure to make a bigger impact! The timing of the annual Mumbai International Boat Show in February works against it as the boating season ends within two months of the event. By the time follow-ups and deals reach the stage of fruition; monsoons arrive and the season ends. This dissuades buyers and causes them to postpone their purchase. However, it is a sizable annual show and a catalyst to the industry. Although the current scenario of infrastructure development and overall progress is slow, the boating industry is moving. Every season sees new entrants in the market. International brands are setting up shop in India every year. Industry players believe in the potential of boating in India and this dream or vision of the future is what is keeping them afloat. www.IndiaYachtPage.com congratulates MIBS on another successful show and looks forward to being a part of it again next year.

River Rafting is a wonderful adventure sport that takes us from the great heights of the Himalayas to the plains of India. The states of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarancal, Maharashtra and Karnataka are ideal destinations to enjoy river rafting in India. India is a land that offers myriad experiences to tourists. There are many places that are largely unexplored and which when properly tapped the tourism industry will blossom further.

DANDELI

Dandeli, in Karnataka, is an ideal destination for rafters. Located about 125 km from Goa, Dandeli is gaining popularity. A large number of rivers originate from Western Ghats, and Dandeli being located at a close proximity is blessed with River Kali. The best season to visit this Dandeli is between October and May.

Kali is a short and swift river located in North Karnataka on the borders of Maharashtra and Goa. It moves towards west and serves as an excellent white water rafting location. River Rafting is one of the most adventurous sports at Dandeli. The first and second rapids are the most important and are named ‘Adi’s Beard’ and ‘The Stitch’ respectively. The other rapids located at river Kali are the Smugglers’ Trove, Stanley’s Squeeze, etc. Overnight rafting trips are available here. The nearest cities from where you can reach Dandeli are:
Bangalore – 470 km
Pune – 465 km
The nearest airport available is in Goa
The other activities available at Dandeli are Overnight Camping, Rappelling, Bird sighting and Jungle Safari in an open jeep.
For the sheer excitement of rafting in the river Kali you will surely keep coming to Dandeli again and again!

Coorg
If you thought the misty mountains and the best coffee flavors are all that Coorg offers then you were wrong, there is more. You can experience white water rafting in Coorg!

Coorg has slowly but surely evolved from merely being a haven for those on the look out for a summer respite, into one of the most sought after river rafting destinations. 250 kilo meters away from Bangalore, it is easy to make an unplanned Coorg rafting adventure trip. Located in southern Karnataka, this area is naturally endowed with the topography that is conducive to the south-west monsoon effectively finding their way into rain-fed streams and rivers, which in turn are ideal for rapids suitable for white water rafting.

River Barapole is one such river that is born in south of Coorg , and empties into the Arabian Sea after flowing through the state of Kerala. The Upper Barapole River, given the right water conditions, is undoubtedly the top spot in South India for white water rafting. The outcome of these combined is several breath-taking water-falls along its course. The Barapole has two huge falls on its main course hidden away in the Brahmagiri Sanctuary and impossible to access in the monsoon, along with the Saaratabbi Falls on one of its tributaries that jumps from a height of 434 ft.

The fact that this river receives huge amounts of rainfall during the south-west monsoon ensures that it has a better flow than many other rivers that traverse the Western Ghats. That gives it the huge advantage of facilitating a rather extended season for rafting in Coorg – at least 4 months of ‘raft able’ water; from June to October.

The nearest airports are Bangalore (260 kilo meters) and Mangalore (135 kilo meters). The nearest rail-heads are at Mangalore, Mysore and Hassan (146 kilo meters). White water rafting in Coorg is not to be missed if you are a fan of this amazing sport.

Joysticks have found their use in almost all industries. From aviation to electronic gaming and from hydraulic control systems to ground-air warfare mechanisms, all of them resort to the aid of joysticks in some or the other way. Joysticks revolutionized the world of electronic gaming and increased the level of user interactivity as people preferred using a joystick over the normal remote control as it provided a much better user interface. With the rapid progress in technology joysticks have been altered in several ways to suit different requirements. One of the latest applications being the VOLVO PENTA IPS system.

It is a modern alternative to the inboard shaft system. One of the greatest innovations ever in boating with car-like handling and maneuvering, joystick for easy docking plus dramatically increased efficiency. The Volvo IPS system was first introduced by Volvo in the 2005 London Boat show and since then it has taken the entire boating industry by storm.

With the Volvo Penta IPS Joystick, maneuvering is simplified, the driver just pushes or rotates the joystick in the desired direction and the boat responds: forward, reverse, sideways, or spins on its own axis. The Volvo Penta IPS Joystick uses the engine and drive units in programmed synchronization to perform any maneuver the operator desires. The secret behind the amazing moves is the Volvo Penta IPS system with it’s individually steer able drive units. Sophisticated and specially developed software in the EVC system transforms the driver’s joystick movements into steering angles, gear shifts and throttle positions. The boat moves exactly according to the driver’s intentions. Boating becomesa very easy and can be enjoyed by one and all. By simply moving the joystick even a child can navigate the boat with ease!

The following steps show how it is operated:

Lower left button: activate or deactivate the joystick.

Lower right button: high mode, to get more power if needed, e.g. if wind or current is strong.

Upper left button: activate or deactivate “Dynamic Positioning System” (option).

Push the joystick to port or starboard and your boat goes sideways. Even “impossible” berths are now accessible.

Twist the top to rotate. Combine it with any other move to compensate for wind or current.

You can do all your slow-speed driving easier than the traditional way in any direction! Some of the advantages that the Volvo Penta IPS system offers over the traditional inboard shafts system are:

35% better efficiency

20% higher top speed

15% faster acceleration

30% reduced fuel consumption

50% lower perceived sound level

Car-like handling and maneuvering and the joystick option for easy docking.

Within six years of its introduction the Volvo Penta IPS system has nearly transformed the entire boating experience. Today, more than 10,000 IPS units are installed in more than 250 different boat models worldwide and is expected to register more impressive figures very soon.

Have you ever thought of carrying an entire kayak in your bag pack? With the latest inflatable kayaks you can fold and carry an entire kayak in your backpack!

Have you ever thought of carrying an entire kayak in your bag pack? With the latest inflatable kayaks you can fold and carry an entire kayak in your backpack! These kayaks have become an instant rage among people who are into kayaking. This is because adventure sports like kayaking and rafting are about being instinctive and taking quick decisions. So it becomes very easy to just leave for your destination when your heart gives you the nod because you don’t need to worry about the availability of a kayak as it is already neatly folded and packed in your bag. When you have an inflatable kayak, you have the liberty to explore, whether it is the far reaches of a calm lake or the rapids of a raging river!

Inflatable kayaks are usually made using low stretch polyester and heavy duty rubber. The exterior is coated with 1,200 denier Nitrylon to increase its toughness. On the other hand the interior is kept simple. This reduces the weight and the packed size. Apart from the fact that they are easily portable, inflatable kayaks have many other advantages over a normal kayak. These kayaks are more stable than the usual kayaks and offer better maneuverability. Some models have fins and skegs which allow the kayak to be maneuvered easily thus allowing the paddlers to relax and appreciate the scenery around them.

Inflatable kayaks offer better storage space that enables one to store more essentials. Despite being equal to a conventional kayak in nearly every category, inflatable kayaks cost significantly less money. It’s easy to get an inflatable kayak loaded with features at a reasonable price, and even some of the larger kayaks – which seat as many as three people – can be found fully loaded for a fraction of the cost of a conventional kayak. Inflatable kayaks glide through the water with incredible ease, and paddlers will feel far less of a strain than they would.

Despite all these advantages inflatable kayaks also possess some disadvantages. Although very comfortable, you have to sit on the floor of the kayak with a backrest to lean against and you will definitely get a wet bum. Also there are certain weight restrictions. The ideal weight that the kayak can carry is 220 lbs or 100kg. Thus people of a larger frame or carrying a lot of gear may not be suited to use the inflatable kayak. Inflatable kayaks find their application in various activities like fishing, rafting, sea kayaking etc. Inflatable kayaks glide easily and offer less traction over and thus travel at a good speed. To increase the speed of the kayak a gasoline or electric powered motor can be used.

Whether you choose to turn your kayak into a sailboat, a fishing boat, or a motorboat, it’s evident that inflatable kayaks are equal or better than traditional kayaks in nearly every category and are quickly carving a name for themselves in more than just the inflatable boat industry – it’s cutting into the conventional boat industry as well!

“He was 3 months old when he first went sailing with his father. He also went sailing with the kids of the other members of the RBYC. Gradually this interest in sailing grew into a passion and by the time he was 11 he shocked all of us by winning the National Sailing championship in Goa. Sailing has become a very important part of his life and he is working hard to succeed at the international levels”, says Mrs. Anju Dutta as she recollects the journey of her son, Upamanyu Dutta, from the time he was a toddler to the day he became a gold medalist at the Asian championship in Doha, Qatar. Upamanyu, a class 10 student at the Bombay International School is currently the defending champion at the National level in the Optimist category which he has won three times in a row. Son of international yachtsman, Gautama Dutta, Upamanyu comes from a family of sailors. “My father has been my inspiration from the start. Before I underwent international training and started to train under foreign coaches, it was my father who used to guide me. I am still learning a lot from him and I have a long way to go if I want to be like him someday”, says Upamanyu.

He won his first title at the age of 11 at the National Sailing championship in Goa where he was also adjudged the most promising sailor. He has also won the Hyderabad monsoon regatta in 2009. At the international stage he has participated in several events. He won the 2nd place in Hong Kong in 2010. He won the gold medal at the Asian championship in Doha. He participated in the New Zealand regatta in December 2011.

Currently Upamanyu is submerged in studies and is preparing for his class 10 exams. But that doesn’t mean he has lost touch with sailing. He trains and practices regularly to achieve his dream which is to win many medals for India. He wishes to move on to other categories of sailing. “I would like to try the Laser category and the 420s categories. But I am not sure of what to choose. Right now I am all into studies but will make the decision very soon”, he says.

When asked about the current scenario of sailing in India and what he thinks about his contemporaries Upamanyu has a very positive outlook. “Sailing has a great scope in India and is slowly emerging as a competitive form of sport. There are a lot of people who are quite competitive but I think Veer Menon is a strong competitor and has the potential to go places”. At the tender age of 15, Upamanyu has achieved a lot and is still gunning forward to shine at bigger events. He is truly a great prospect for India and a source of inspiration for all those who wish to be professional sailors.

Rohini has sailed in different categories and each time she has come out victorious, “I started sailing when I was 11 in the optimist category. Later on I switched to the 420 class and it was in this category that I bagged my first medal at the Asian Championship. But again I had to change the category to Laser radial as my partner discontinued sailing.” Rohini’s journey was not an easy one. She had to fight off many challenges, “My journey was not that easy. It was challenging but at the same time it was fun. I had to balance my studies and sailing as I was simultaneously pursuing my MBBS. My passion for sailing motivated me to strive further and achieve what I wanted to.”

Rohini loves to visit and live in different countries and sail at different places.
“I love sailing in Cascais,Portugal and in Perth, Austrailia. I remember sailing with dolphins in Melbourne. It was a wonderful experience and I will cherish it throughout my life.” Rohini’s list of awards is endless. She has won 10 gold and 5 silver medals at the National level and has 2 Asian gold medals to her name. She has won the Nationals in the Laser radial class for seven successive years from 2005 to 2011. Also Rohini is the first Indian women to win an International medal in the Laser radial class. She has won a bronze at the Izola Sailing cup in 2009.

She is ranked number 1 in India, 4th in Asia and 135th in the world. Currently she is training in Israel and won the 3rd place in the laser radial women regatta at the Eilat Israli nationals and 2nd at the nationals in Tel Aviv Nationals in the adult category in March and April respectively. Also she is taking part in a few regattas in Europe before the World Championships in Germany in May. It is the last qualifier for the London Olympics in July. “This is the last opportunity to qualify for the Olympic Games and I want to make the most of it. If I do qualify I will become the first Indian women to qualify for the Olympics in the laser radial class.”

Rohini is quite worried about the current scenario of sailing in India and believes that if proper facilities are provided to sailors they can take the nation to victory at an international level. She also believes that the lack of proper coaching is responsible for the current slack that the sport is facing. “The government wakes up too late to support us for the Asian games and Olympics. There should be a better long term program for sailors and proper training and coaching facilities should be provided. Also the politics in the federation should be curbed so that genuine talent can get a chance to showcase their skills.” says a Rohini who yearns to see India make a mark on the international front. We all hope that Rohini’s vision comes true and India truly becomes a force to reckon with in the sport of sailing. We wish Rohini all the best and look forward to her becoming the first Indian women to qualify for the Olympics in the laser radial class.

Luxury brand collaborations are amongst the most powerful avenues for creating truly special products that generate excitement and interest from press and consumers alike. The best of these collaborations enable two companies to produce something that is rare, unique and enhances their brand appeal by leaps & bounds! Luxury fashion brands that teamed up with the ultimate definer of lifestyle, ‘luxury yachts’ have created a masterful marketing buzz. Their aim is not to make money but to make envy. If limited editions feature in your shopping list, chances are you may want to explore these beautiful yachts now linked to your favourite fashion brand.

Some of the most prominent collaborations between luxury brands and the yachting industry constitute the perfect opportunity to expand a lifestyle brand’s universe and create the experience of ultimate luxury! Italy’s most renowned design houses Gucci and Riva teamed up their excellence in design and craftsmanship and gave birth to the ‘Aquariva by Gucci’. The iconic Riva boat has become without doubt one of the most evocative images of Italian style, sophistication and elegance. It is a symbol of a glamorous lifestyle that sparks fond memories of La Dolce Vita – a golden age when both Gucci and Riva attracted an enthusiastic following among the international jet set. Another unique collaboration was between Luxury goods giant LVMH and Princess Super Yachts. Together they unveiled their newest creation: the M Class Princess Super Yacht at the London International Boat Show earlier in 2011. LVMH acquired the UK-based yacht builder Princess Yachts back in 2008 and for the premiere of their first yacht of the series, the 32M, the company brought in some of its other brands such as Fendi, De Beers and Moet to demonstrated the glamour of the new range of Princess yachts.

Aquariva by Gucci
The Aquariva by Gucci, made-to-order yacht is an initiative to celebrate Gucci’s 90th anniversary year in 2011. This unique collaboration between two of Italy’s most renowned design houses celebrates the era of La Dolce Vita, when a joie de vivre, glamour and elegance defined an attitude and a lifestyle. In their respective sectors, Gucci and Riva have similar stories, each with a tradition of excellence in design and craftsmanship that has led to international notoriety. If creating your own personal, made-to-order yacht has long been your dream, Gucci has finally made that dream come true along with Riva.

Frida Giannini, Gucci Creative Director, said, “Over the decades the iconic Riva boat has become without doubt one of the most evocative images of Italian style, sophistication and elegance. It is a symbol of a glamorous lifestyle that sparks fond memories of La Dolce Vita – a golden age when both Gucci and Riva attracted an enthusiastic following among the international jet set. It is therefore especially meaningful in Gucci’s 90th anniversary year to be able to recognise and celebrate the great traditions and values of both Gucci and Riva through the Aquariva by Gucci.”

Riva, the iconic Italian boat-maker established in 1842 in Sarnico, is one of the oldest and most celebrated boat-yard in the world. Defining the Aquariva by Gucci is a fiberglass hull and detailing painted in Gucci’s own hue of glossy white, while Riva’s signature use of mahogany with classic varnish finish. The waterproof fabric covering the seats and sundeck features the emblematic
Guccissima print, while the bed upholstery is defined by the beauty of Gucci white cotton. The iconic touch is provided by Gucci’s green-red-green web detailing which edges the floating line, perfectly complementing the unique green crystal windshield. Completing the Gucci customization is a series
of exclusive Riva by Gucci accessories. The innovative two-speed electronic gear reveals all the power of the two 380-horsepower Yanmar engines, ensuring an exceptional performance, with a maximum speed of 41 knots and a 150-mile range at cruising speed. The Aquariva Gucci will have you sailing the high seas wrapped in the ultimate luxury only Gucci can provide, and the world-class performance that Riva is so famous for. This is one marriage made in heaven!

Aquariva Gucci received acknowledgement from the Nautical Design Awards panel of judges during a gala evening in Miami on 18th February’11 organised by Yacht & Sail and ADI (Associazione per il Disegno Industriale – Association for Industrial Design). Amongst these, Ferretti Group was acknowledged for its Aquariva Gucci project, awarded especially for the co-branding between the
nautical world and other luxury Italian brands. The panel of judges also highlighted how Aquariva Gucci is the utmost expression of Italian design. Riva is a brand of the Ferretti Group, one of the world leaders in the design, construction and sale of motoryachts with a unique portfolio of some
of the most exclusive, prestigious brands in the nautical world: Ferretti Yachts, Pershing, Itama, Bertram, Riva, Mochi Craft, CRN and Ferretti Custom Line.

The M Class
Luxury goods giant LVMH, the international group of 50 luxury brands (including Moet & Chandon, Louis Vuitton, Fendi and De Beers) inked a deal to acquire control of Princess Yachts International, maker of the craft that graced the James Bond film “The World Is Not Enough,” in the latest step by a luxury conglomerate into the world of haute gamme boating. Founded in Plymouth, UK in 1965, Princess is a world leader in creating motor yachts of bold design and modernist comfort. Few Miami rap videos would be complete without an appearance of one of its “fly bridge” yachts, whose hulls are by the noted designer Bernard Olesinki.

The acquisition has borne first fruit in a 32-metre yacht; the M-Class Princess Yacht, with interior design by LVMH member Fendi. In January, the company literally rolled out the 32M, a 105′ beauty displayed indoors (!) at the London Boat Show. She’s the company’s largest yacht so far. Princess reported sealing deals for six 32Ms by the close of the show. Like all Princesses, the 32M is designed and built for going to sea, not sitting at the marina turning heads, but she’ll do that, too: The Company says she’s “engineered to the highest seagoing standards.”

The $11 million 32M, is a long range cruising yacht boasting a huge saloon among other amenities, available with a choice of four or five cabins, including a master suite with a split level bathroom, two or three double bedrooms and a twin room. Over 13m (42′) high, the 32M makes quite an impressive display. She is also one of the largest yachts to be built using resin-infusion technology,
which reduces weight and improves performance and cruising range. Princess installed a state-of- the-art “glass bridge” control and monitoring system aboard the 32M, one of the first aboard a yacht of this size. A unified package that is both ergonomic and intuitive to use, the system is usually found on much larger yachts and commercial vessels.

The owner’s suite is on the main deck, with large windows that provide excellent views on two sides. Forward, an owner’s head includes a spacious shower and separate whirlpool bath. As usual with a yacht of this size and caliber, each 32M owner has many opportunities to customize the yacht to meet his/her specific needs. The 32M’s salon features large windows on either side. Sliding doors lead out to a drop-down balcony to starboard, giving the entire main deck the “benefit of a spectacular open vista,” says Princess. More yachts, with brand-designed interiors and Louis Vuitton luggage, to follow in 2012. While they would call it “the LVMH lifestyle experience”, we say: “Playboy at the helm.”
